X is for Xmas
Christmas is a wonderful time for groups especially with so many great ideas now available for a day out or short break to get everyone into the festive spirit. Whether it is capturing the imagination by taking a step back in time to sample a traditional Christmas from different periods and centuries past or experiencing more modern seasonal experiences such as cocktailmaking, cookery classes, or creative workshops, there really is something for everyone. One popular theme is for groups to visit a historic house or castle especially with so many of the UK heritage properties now having a strong seasonal focus to draw visitors to capture the essence of what Christmas would have been like in days gone by. Many venues now also tap into what technology can offer by creating and hosting light trails, projection shows, and immersive digital installations which are tremendous spectacle and really get you in feel and mood for the season.
If a combination of more traditional entertainment, slapstick fun and seasonal cheer is your group's thing, then pantomimes are a classic choice which never seem to go out of fashion, still offering a hilarious and interactive experience for all, and hugely popular with audiences young and old. On a lighter note (quite literally), carol services and musical performances with a seasonal theme provide an atmospheric and traditional form of bringing in and celebrating the season. For many groups, a festive train journey experience is a much sought-after part of the Christmas itinerary. Look around and there is so much choice with numerous heritage railways running a regular dedicated schedule of Santa Express services with mulled wine, minced pies and all as part of their scenic winter events. Once the nights draw in and the weather begins to turn a little colder, let's not forget one of England's fondest traditions, Christmas markets, which are still a firm favourite for groups.
There's nothing better than wandering round a Christmas Market to really get you into the festive mood as towns and cities across the UK are transformed into a winter wonderland of everything you could wish for in a yuletide setting. Wooden chalet huts pop up with twinkling lights, elegantly decorated trees, delicious food and drink, and a host of fabulous gift ideas all part of the allure getting visitors into the spirit of the season. Each market has its own identity and in some cases its own dedicated theme with many drawing back to Christmases past with Victorian and Georgian themes. What you will find wherever you go are plenty of local treats, fun activities, nativity scenes to explore, plus a wealth of tasty food, mulled wine and hot chocolate to sample and enjoy.
