P is for Piers

The UK's seaside piers are iconic symbols of our coast, standing as both architectural marvels and engineering feats. The pleasure pier emerged during the Victorian era, built to entertain and attract holidaymakers as seaside tourism exploded during the mid-19th century. Initially designed to allow steamboats to dock, piers quickly evolved into leisure destinations, offering attractions such as theatres, arcades, promenades, and stunning sea views.

Around 50 of our piers still exist today, offering culture vultures, wildlife lovers and thrillseekers of all ages the quintessential British experience. From Brighton to Blackpool, Llandudno Pier In north Wales won the prestigious ' Pier of the Year' award for 2025. The hotly contested annual award is voted for by the members of the National Piers Society, the official campaign and lobby organisation representing the interests of Britain's seaside piers. Staying in Wales you will find Mumbles Pier which is one of Swansea's most iconic and recognisable landmarks. Steeped in a rich history the Pier conveys a triumph in Victorian Architecture.

Mumbles Pier is one of only six surviving iron piers in Wales and is currently Grade II listed. With an abundance of award-winning attractions, Blackpool has something for everyone. Thrill-seekers can enjoy the thrills and spills of the white-knuckle rides at Blackpool Pleasure Beach or visit the worldfamous Blackpool Tower, one of the most loved and recognisable landmarks in the world.

However, no trip to Blackpool would be complete without a traditional stroll on the pier with fish and chips. Brighton Palace Pier is one of the UK's most iconic seaside attraction on the South Coast welcoming over 3 million visitors a year a Grade II* listed structure with a deep history that coincides with Brighton's development as a seaside resort town the pier has evolved alongside the city to become what it is today. It has entertaining fun rides and attractions, bars and a restaurant alongside a fantastic programme of seasonal entertainment.

In Great Yarmouth you can find Britania Pier this historic seaside pier has been standing proud at the heart of Great Yarmouth's golden mile seafront since 1901. Britannia Pier has something for everyone, whether you're looking for a fun-filled day out or an evening of entertainment it offers the lot. It hosts an amazing line-up of live shows, great food, family entertainment and over 18's casino. You can dance the night away at one of the piers two bars and nightclub, take a spin on the rides and attractions.

If you are in search of the simpler pleasures and pace of life you can take a leisurely stroll along the Victorian Promenade whilst taking in the coastal views and sea air! Weston-super-Mare has officially reclaimed its position as a must-visit British seaside spot, being named a Trending Destination for 2026 by coach operator FlixBus. Once known for its Victorian holiday heritage, the Somerset town is enjoying a new wave of popularity as travellers rediscover the charm of traditional British beach breaks.

At the centre of Weston-super-Mare's comeback is the iconic Grand Pier, a Grade II listed landmark first opened in 1904, blending nostalgic seaside fun with modern entertainment.
